Case Study

Coffs Harbour

RETAINING WALLS

Project: Terramesh Wall

Location:
Bruxner Park Road, Coffs Harbour, New South Wales

Client: Coffs Harbour City Council

As the saying goes, it is an ill wind (or perhaps a storm) that blows no good. Bruxner Park Road is now in a better condition than ever, with extensive work having been carried out as a result of the November 23rd storm. The storm left the road extensively damaged after large quantities of rubble and rock washed down onto it from the surrounding hills.

The work, estimated to have cost more than $760,000, was funded by the Road and Traffic Authority. Initial work to remove the rubble from the road and partially fill curves where it had been completely washed away, left the road passable but in a narrow, dangerous condition.

After meeting with residents in mid December, locked gates were erected at either end of the damaged section of the road and keys were provided to residents. Advisory signs directed tourists and non-residents to Bruxner Park and Sealy Lookout via alternative routes.

In late December rehabilitation work began on the road with the construction of retaining walls mad of rock-filled baskets called gabions. Drainage culverts under the road were replaced, the road formation repaired, and some reconstructed curves widened. The damaged road pavement was also replaced.

We thank all those residents who showed a great patience while works were being carried out, including during several days when the road was closed to traffic.
