Case StudyDandenong RangesRETAINING WALLSProject: Terramesh Wall
During July of 1996, high rainfall and subsequent flooding in the Dandenong Ranges (40km east-south-east of Melbourne) led to a number of landslips in the area. One such site was a sizeable slip at Selby-Aura Road, Menzies Creek.
This site and three others were packaged and put out to tender by the Shire of Yarra Ranges in June 1997. The requirements for this particular site called for a 6 metre high reinforced soil solution. The Maccaferri Terramesh® system was preferred for the following reasons: Terramesh® can tolerate differential movements, which is advantageous ensuring the integrity of the structure. 2. Permeability of the Structure Terramesh® is permeable and appropriate in an area with high groundwater regimes. 3. Economics of the Structure To maximise the amount of walls for a given budget. 4. Aesthetic of the Structure The heavily vegetated surrounds warranted the use of a system to blend with natural environment. 5. Proven System Terramesh® has been successfully used on hundreds of projects throughout Australia for more than 12 years. Terramesh® system comprises a rock filled gabion front face with an integral mesh panel being utilised as the soil reinforcement. The embankment forming the reinforced soil structure is constructed using select granular fill, free draining with a high angle of friction. Other backfill types can be accommodated but specific design is required. | |||||
