Case Study
Bobbin Head Road
RETAINING WALLS
Project: Terramesh Wall
Location: Bobbin Head Road, Hornsby, Sydney, NSW
Client: Roads & Traffic Authority (NSW)
The RTA in Thornleigh contacted us following the closure of one lane of Bobbin Head Road (north side) as a result of a landslip during heavy rain.
A design and construct proposal and estimate was submitted, accepted and a minor contract was subsequently let.
The scheme involved creating access into the slip area and constructing a 6.0m high Terramesh Wall, which was later modified on site to 8.0m to accommodate a sandstone outcrop, which was hidden until excavation began.
The 20m long wall employed the recently developed Terramesh soil reinforcement principals and was one of the first of its kind in Australia. Terramesh walls incorporate a front facing of conventional gabions anchored by Terramesh soil reinforcement panel placed in select backfill.
Construction of the wall was completed with budget and in about 8 days with the associated guardrail and road re-surfacing work by RTA day labour.
The quick response for site evaluation design and subsequent construction meant that the road could be fully opened in time for the busy Easter Holiday period.
